But our textbooks seem to credit Edison more than Tesla

Well, we have to mention that Edison did not invent the light bulb rather he developed it. Edison purchased the patent from Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans and later developed it to a better edition.  That is why everything you know about Thomas Edison might be wrong.
